Baltimore Stay Alive Powered by Henry’s Four-Touchdown Performance, Texans Secure Postseason Spot
The veteran running back rushed for a year-best 216 rushing yards and matched a personal best with four rushing scores as the Ravens kept their playoff hopes alive by defeating the Packers by a score of 41-24 on Saturday evening.
Henry had three scores in the opening two quarters and then scored again on a 25-yard run with 1:56 left in the game. His seventh career 200-yard rushing performance overtook Adrian Peterson and OJ Simpson for the most in league history.
His 36 rushing attempts marked a career high.
The Baltimore Ravens, now 8-8 now must rely on the division-leading Steelers fall at the Browns on Sunday. A Steelers victory in Cleveland would end the Ravens' postseason dreams. If the Browns win that game, the could capture the division title by defeating the Pittsburgh on the road next week.
The Packers, falling to 9-6-1 lost their third straight, enabling the Bears to secure the division crown. The Green Bay had already clinched a postseason spot earlier in the week.
Both teams were missing their first-string QBs as the Ravens' star QB is sidelined by a back issue while Green Bay’s Jordan Love is in the league's head injury program. The two replacement starters – Tyler Huntley and Green Bay’s Malik Willis – were both effective in a contest that featured only one punt.
Willis went 18-for-21 for a personal-best 288 passing yards and one touchdown, and he also ran for 60 yards and two scores before exiting after re-injuring a shoulder injury. Huntley was 16 of 20 for 107 yards with a scoring pass.
The difference in the game was the Packers' failure to contain Derrick Henry, who helped the Ravens outgain on the ground the Packers 307-79.
The star running back was not utilized in Baltimore’s final two series the previous week in a narrow defeat. The veteran running back’s absence in the final period was a hot topic around Baltimore all week.
The Ravens made sure he got the ball frequently from the outset. Henry’s dominance allowed the offense to score on their initial five drives and take a 27-14 halftime lead.
Henry accumulated 15 carries in the team's opening two drives and capped each of them with touchdown runs. He added a further three-yard touchdown just before the end of the half.
The Packers made it competitive by outscoring the Ravens ten to nothing in the third quarter.
After a three-pointer, the Packers elicited the initial punt of the night. Willis then ran for an 11-yard score to cut the deficit to 27-24.
But the Baltimore squad answered on their next series.
The workhorse back ran for a crucial first down on a third-and-5. He closed the third quarter with a long run. Those key runs set up a scoring strike from the quarterback to Zay Flowers.
The Packers' quarterback drove the offense into Ravens' land before injuring his throwing shoulder and heading to the locker room. His replacement threw an pick on his only pass.
Houston Texans Lock Up Postseason Berth After Win Over Los Angeles
CJ Stroud connected on a pair of deep scores on the team's opening possessions, and the Texans went on to defeat the Los Angeles Chargers 20-16 on Saturday afternoon to clinch a third consecutive playoff berth.
The Texans (11-5) extended their winning streak to eight games, their best run in several seasons.
The Los Angeles Chargers, also 11-5 had their positive run snapped and ceded the division crown to their rivals.
The young QB's pair of quick strikes shocked the defense and gave Houston a 14-0 lead. On his initial throw of the game, he found a wideout for a 75-yard score. He later threw a deep scoring pass on the next drive.
He completed his first six throws of the game. He ended the day with 244 passing yards.
Houston’s defense recorded third-down sacks on the opponent's first two possessions. The Los Angeles offense were forced to three-and-out on three of their first four possessions.
The LA signal-caller, playing with a hand injury, was brought down on five occasions.
An interception of Stroud in the first half only produced a three points for the Chargers. Another interception failed to produce any scores.
The Chargers were stopped on the goal line by a crucial interception. The target saw the pass bounce away, leading to the change of possession.
The placekicker missed a kick from close distance just before halftime and later missed an extra point on the last possession after a score.
The Texans' kicker converted kicks from 41 and 44 yards to help secure the win.
