NBA game action

The Miami Heat put up 86 opening half points against the Memphis Grizzlies

The Heat earned a crushing 146 to 114 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in their first basketball match since guard Rozier was arrested over suspected unlawful gambling.

Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was additionally arrested as part of a broad federal investigation into illegal gambling. Both men deny the allegations.

However, the Heat were focused as they scored eighty-six first-half scores to be ahead of Memphis by 39 at halftime, the largest halftime lead in the franchise's 37 year history.

Bam Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and afterwards said Rozier had the team's full backing.

"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. He's like family ultimately."

Miami head coach Spoelstra added: "Rozier is somebody who is important to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.

"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through the situation."

Portland also won their initial match since the detentions, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and leading the squad to a convincing 139-119 win over the Golden State Warriors.

"Everyone experienced great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests

Speaking about the detentions for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the fairness of the game," he told a broadcaster. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

The commissioner further mentioned an league probe into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Hornets versus the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.

"We investigated the matter and were open about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the NBA can't do.

"So, we've been working with them since then. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.

"And 30 months later, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in fairness to Terry.

"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
