The US President Compels Thailand to Recommit to Cambodian Truce with Tariff Warnings
Washington has exerted influence on Thailand to reaffirm its dedication to a ceasefire agreement with Cambodia, indicating that trade negotiations could be halted as attempts are made to stop a Trump-mediated peace agreement from collapsing.
Border Tensions Escalate
In recent days, Thailand declared it was suspending the ceasefire deal, alleging Cambodian forces of planting new explosives along the mutual frontier, including one that allegedly injured a Thai soldier on duty, who lost a foot in the explosion.
Following this, one person has been killed and several others wounded by exchanges of fire along the Thai-Cambodia frontier, raising concerns of a new round of tit-for-tat fighting.
US Trade Pressure
Over the weekend, a Thai foreign ministry spokesperson informed reporters that a official communication from the U.S. trade office declaring the suspension of trade deal talks was obtained on Friday night.
He quoted the letter as stating that trade negotiations – which are addressing a US tariff of 19% – could resume once Thailand renewed its pledge to carrying out the mutual truce agreement.
“Trade talks are ongoing and distinct from frontier matters,” stated a different official representative.
Trump’s Tariff Threat
Addressing reporters aboard the presidential plane as he traveled to the Sunshine State on Friday, the US leader implied that he had employed tariff warnings in calls with the ASEAN nation heads.
He stated, “Today, I prevented a conflict using tariffs, the menace of duties,” continuing, “they are performing well. I believe they will be okay.”
Truce Deal Origins
Trump oversaw the signing of a ceasefire agreement, held in Malaysia this last autumn, and has promoted it as one of multiple agreements around the world he says should win him the Nobel Peace prize.
The worst fighting in a ten years between Thai and Cambodian troops erupted in July, with exchanges of fire, shelling and aerial attacks leaving dozens of people killed and 300,000 displaced.
Longstanding Border Dispute
The two neighboring countries have a longstanding border dispute that originates from disagreements over colonial-era maps created by French cartographers. Historic shrines along the frontier are disputed by each nation.
